The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced people to a lot of new information: from TV shows, books, and cooking recipes to online games. One of these is a video game that has recently gotten very popular - “Among Us” that can be played both on the phone and computer.
The game has two roles - crewmates and impostors. The “crew” resides on a spaceship, where the inside is divided into various rooms: Electrical, Storage, Reactor, MedBay, etc.
The crew is instructed to do tasks, like “fix wiring,” “empty garbage,” and so on. The crewmates walk around the spaceship, while the “impostor” tries to find victims and kill them in isolated spaces. The game revolves around finding the impostor(s). The game is engaging, fun, and humorous.
Out of 92 GZAAT students, 86 of them play this game. This is the vast majority, which once more makes us see just how popular the game is. Most of them suggested that their favorite role was a crewmate, since trying to figure out who the impostor is is a very exciting process.
In an interview, Mariam Gurchumelia, a GZAAT class 2024 student said that she’s pretty sure“Among Us” has 15 minutes of fame because there has been a great number of different things famous since quarantine started. These things include “Outer Banks' ', a TV show, which led worldwide when it came out. After a while, people started criticizing it and calling it “overrated”, which Mariam thinks will happen to “Among Us” too. Another student, Irinka Mgebrishvili, disagrees: “I think it's more of a long-lasting success because it got famous back in September and it still is very popular, and everyone still plays it. It obviously won’t be popular forever, but it hasn’t died down as fast as other trends.”.
Two teachers of GZAAT were also interviewed. Kato Tsuladze and Dato Shapakidze both said they had not previously encountered this game, however, after its basis was briefly summarized they compared it to “Mafiosobana”, a card game well known among all generations. Kato Tsuladze told the gazette that “...teenagers are the ones who prefer to play games like that. Thus, in my opinion, the age factor is going to play a role in which generation the video game is going to be popular.
“Opinions clash, but it’s evident that “Among Us” is a wide-spread game that entertains teens ofGZAAT and many more. And next time while talking to your friends on Zoom, maybe you can even play the game.
