Are teachers angry? Are students in trouble? Now that this article has your attention, let’s talk about quarter grades. It has been nearly a month since quarter grades arrived and gave lots of students feedback on the work they have done so far. With the students being nervous, teachers as well are nervous and worried about the grading, because it shows how the students understand topics explained by them and the course in general. Three of our teachers from the Georgian, Physics, and Russian departments were interviewed to answer some questions concerning the topic.
Georgian teacher Rusudan Abramidze says that grades were higher than last year and there were a small number of students who got a low grade overall. “In Georgian especially there were lots of components that were not included in grading, mainly caused by online studying, which could change the grade. Maybe students would work differently if we were in class and had tests, which says a lot about how one is doing and is understanding that subject”, tells Rusudan. She also says that tests are really hard to be written in zoom calls because students cannot be controlled fully.
Russian teacher Maia Khadouri was very delighted with the grades that were written in the first quarter. She says that she has not written a lower grade than a “B”. Mrs. Maia says that It probably happened because of how good some classes are in participation, some of them are still learning and need more practice, but there are some classes that did really well in this criteria. “This year there are not a lot of written assignments but there is some practice in writing, which maybe not always, but sometimes helps with an understanding of a theme,” she says.
Mr. Ilia Mestvrishvili was also very delighted with the grades and said that they were even higher than he expected them to be. “It is harder to assess students when we study with zoom, because even with classwork and class participation there can be unfairness and plagiarism, that’s why I also use other methods like an online whiteboard. Tests and quizzes are also really hard to be written without a new system or a format that could be created to prevent plagiarism”, he says.
Well, it seems like all of the respondents think that grades are higher than last year and there are not as many low grades compared to other years. But there are few factors that some of the teachers think may have given grades a little bit of an “upgrade”. Cheer up, guys! This cruel virus seems to have at least some benefits in raising our grades. Let’s expect the same effort from students next quarter and throughout the whole year, hoping to go back to school soon.
