The Eurovision song contest, mostly known as Eurovision, is an international competition that features primarily European countries. It’s organized by the European Broadcasting Union and has existed since 1956, for 64 years. Some of the famous participants of this contest include ABBA and Celine Dion. Georgia has participated since 2007, with seven of our contestants going to the final and two going into the top 10, both placing ninth.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, to ensure the safety of all contestants, Eurovision was canceled in 2020. However this year it took place from May 18 to May 22. Each year, the contest is held in the country that won the previous year. In 2019 Duncan Laurence from the Netherlands won, so this year’s Eurovision was held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The winner this year was Italy with 524 points, with a rock band called Måneskin. In second place came french Barbara Pravi and in third place Swiss Gjon’s Tears. Georgia finished 16th this year, with the artist Tornike Kipiani performing the song “You.”
Måneskin consists of lead vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The band got relatively famous after ending up second in the eleventh season of the Italian talent show X Factor in 2017. They are successful in their home country, with a number one single, “Torna A Casa”, three number two hits, and two chart-topping albums. The band won Eurovision with the song “Zitti e buoni”, a song written by the band members in 2016.
The band had a drug accusation after their win. The lead singer Damiano David was accused of doing drugs on live TV when he leaned down on a table and his face was out of the shot to see what he was doing. He later explained that Thomas, the guitarist, had broken a glass and he reached down to look at it. Damiano later took a drug test and it came back negative - when asked what he had to say about the accusations, he said “I don't use drugs, guys, please. Please don’t say that, really.”
After Måneskin won the Eurovision, a massive increase was seen by Duolingo in the number of people who took up Italian. They posted on Twitter:
“Indeed! Between Saturday and yesterday, we saw a ~56% increase in new learners taking up Italian – you could say they have... Måneskin in the game.”
The number of followers Damiano David has on his Instagram page (@ykaaar) grew by 222.83% over the course of the past 4 weeks, the number of gained followers being over 2300000. This more than anything shows just how much success the band has gained after their win.
Måneskin is currently touring across 2 countries and has 15 upcoming concerts. Their next tour date is at Palazzo Dello Sport in Rome, and after that, they'll be at Palazzo Dello Sport in Rome. In 2022, they’ll perform in Germany at the Rock am Ring and Rock am Park, music festivals in Germany.
