Are other languages in GZAAT returning? Is it necessary to study any other languages than English and Russian? Let's see what school thinks about it.
Generally, in our school students study English, Russian and Georgian languages. But there are so many foreign languages in the world that can be studied. 63 people participated in a survey concerning this topic. 90.5% of them said that they would like to study other foreign languages in school, 9.5% said that they would not (chart No.1). Also note that question was “Would you want our school to have other foreign languages taught that would not be mandatory?”
As the survey shows, the majority of the students would like to have more foreign languages to study. 9th Grade Student Nino Ioseliani was interviewed about this theme and particularly this question:
(I)-Hello Nino! First of all let’s start with your answer to this question, would you like to be taught other foreign languages?
(N)-Yes I would love to actually! I feel like learning more new languages is really important and it gives you a lot more knowledge.
(I)-What language would you have chosen?
(N)-Probably French, it’s a very beautiful language.
(I)-In the survey, 90% of participants answered that they would love to have more languages, but 10% said that they wouldn’t. Do you think there would be a reason why people wouldn’t choose to have more languages taught?
(N)-This could be because of some people not having enough time for other activities, like gym or football.
-------
If students chose the option “Yes” in the previous question, they had to specify which language they wanted to learn. Here are the results (chart No.2): Leading with 42% is French, followed by Spanish with 17.5% and Italian with 9.5%. There were a lot of students who chose the language they will need in future, others just think that some specific language they chose is just pretty.
Here is a small interview with 10th Grader Nika Lobzhanidze about this theme and survey:
(I)-Nika! What option did you choose in the first survey? Would you like to study other languages?
(N)-Yes, it would be very interesting if the school offered students some additional language classes. I personally would have chosen Italian.
(I)-In the survey lots of people have answered depending on different aspects, what would you say, why do people want to learn other subjects?
(N)-Well, despite the fact that learning a language is very interesting and generally a good trait, I think that some practical use of a new language would be for students who plan to continue education in some countries of Europe where knowing a language helps people in finding more universities.
-----------------------------
There are a lot of thoughts and ideas about this theme, so a person who knows a lot about what would be better for students, Ms. Nana Gabelia, was interviewed concerning the topic:
(I)-Hello Ms. Nana! Thank you for doing this interview with me. First question is what would you think if our school had other foreign languages taught?
(Nana)-I think that learning foreign language is always a good idea. In different periods of time, students were able to learn other languages at school (for example: Italian). But pandemic dictated its own rules and in a way, it slowed down or limited the learning curve. I do think that we need to get back on the track here and it will be nice to see students initiate some kind of foreign language learning club.
(I)-Yes! It would be really good if someone would bring it up! Do you think it is important to know more than two languages when you go abroad?
(Nana)- I believe the more languages you know the more understanding you have of other cultures, traditions, lifestyles. Language helps you to be more mobile, to be more open to new ideas, possibilities, people.
(I)-There are a lot of people like this who want to study and know a lot of languages. What advice would you give them?
(Nana)-Just start. The most important thing is to start. And in many ways it is a very individual process, because some prefer to learn alone with an app, some will need group work and teachers. But the most important thing is to stop dreaming and start acting, hence learning.
(I)-Thank you very much!
------
Voila! Now we know that if anyone will come up with an idea, you are more than welcome to organize it. Maybe someone will do it? Who knows. Polyglots of GZAAT, this is your time to shine!
