Girls for Girls: Helping Hand Project

Nina Aladashvili

In the modern world, the problem of gender equality is still relevant. Women all around the world are fighting for their rights every day. Girls, especially teenagers, suffer from a lack of confidence and love for themselves. One of the steps to solving gender inequality is to empower young women from a young age and teach them self-love and confidence. In response to these issues, students of GZAAT created an initiative “Girls for Girls”. The main purpose of the project is to empower women and discuss their experiences with gender equality.

A few weeks ago the first meeting of the project was held. I interviewed one of its founders, Ana Tvaladze, who explained the aim of the project and the ways for interested students to help and join in detail. The first session was more of an introduction, “We talked about gender stereotypes that we've encountered in our lives”. They also expressed their opinions on feminism and issues revolving around it.

When I asked Ana what was her inspiration for starting “Girls for Girls” she answered “Obviously, in today's world women face lots of stereotypes and barriers in their lives. We wanted to create a project where girls would freely discuss the problems that they encounter. Also, we wanted to raise awareness about feminism because there are lots of prejudices about it. We have hope that the participants of our project will make an impact in their community.”

This project will have an impact in many aspects. First of all, it will be a safe space for girls to express their feelings and thoughts without the fear of being judged. In the program, the participants meet many amazing people and even develop friendships with some of them. This is also a great opportunity to socialize during the pandemic.

The first session of the project has already ended, but interested students can still join in on the next sessions. The founders are planning to have four sessions each year, two in the fall and two in spring. Two of the sessions will be held online so anyone can participate, even from outside of Tbilisi, or from quarantining and self-isolation. For more information and updates visit the project’s Facebook page (გოგონები გოგონებისთვის FB page). When the next session will be scheduled they will post a google form for you to fill out. If you’re from GZAAT you can also volunteer by messaging Ana Tvalavadze or the Facebook page directly.
