How Students and Teachers Establish their Relationship During Online Learning

Nino Ioseliani

Is it important to get to know your teachers and establish a good relationship with them? Well, doing it online is not so easy. As most of you probably already know, in September, a new academic year started online in Tbilisi. GZAAT isn’t an exception.

The freshmen have just started high school and had to meet their new teachers through Zoom lessons. It must have been a different experience for all students. To find out what type of relationship they have established through online learning and how hard or easy it was for them, a Google form was sent out about this topic.

The first question was about what type of relationship they had with the teachers. In the chart below, the red section represents formal relationships, and the blue section shows friendly ones. As you can see, the votes were pretty close to each other, but most students voted that they have a friendly relationship with their teachers.

Then, the next question asked them what they thought the reason for that type of relationship was. The students who voted for “friendly”, said that the reason for their friendly relationship was either because most teachers were laid back, understanding, and sociable or that they, the students themselves, were very communicative. The other students, who voted for “formal”, said that they only established formal relationships because they met them online and didn’t get the chance to meet in person.

Another question that was asked freshman students was if they found it hard to get to know the teachers. In the chart below, the blue stands for “yes”, red stands for “no”, and the different colored sections are “others”, where they could write a different type of answer.

As you can see, the majority of the votes said “yes”, which means that many of the students found it hard to get to know the teachers and establish a friendly relationship with them. The reasoning they provided was that they had online learning and that it is harder to communicate with them that way. Some of them said that it depends on the teacher and the subject.

In the end, the survey shows that for the freshman students, it is difficult to get along with the teachers and establish a friendly relationship because they haven’t met them outside zoom, and while in online classes, it isn’t as easy to open up and become comfortable around them.
