Musicians that will stand the test of time: What GZAAT students think?

We are constantly surrounded by many different sounds: the noise of trees, the buzzing of bees, thunder, city noise, the voices of people and animals. And, of course, music! Every single day, most of us listen to different music, which, in one way or another, will be found somewhere, regardless of whether we want it or not - in a car, bus, supermarket, cinema, on the street. Music can not only be heard but also felt. For example, the great musician Ludwig van Beethoven was deaf, but this did not stop him from creating masterpieces. However, which musician will stand the test of time persists. To try to solve this dilemma, let’s take a look at some of the famous musicians and GZAAT student’s opinions.

First on the list is Harry Styles.

He is well known for being the first male to appear on the American Vogue in a ball gown. It will be almost impossible to find a person who hasn't heard of him. He was in one of the most popular UK bands - One Direction. He has always been known for his unique style and individualism. One of the GZAAT students who chose Harry Styles and prefers to stay anonymous says: “I think other than his looks, Harry's music and a past career in One Direction will be remembered for a long time. People adore him, not only for his music; it's more than that. One of the reasons that he blew up again (after one direction) is because everyone got to see the real side of him. Fans were able to connect with his music and be able to express themselves and be vulnerable the way that he was. And also it's his personality that makes you want to keep looking because he has that charm that entertains people and also he is not an arrogant person. Harry uses his platform to spread love and kindness. His boldness in fashion and expressing his feminine side is what awoke people. There is a certain level of fame he achieved in One Direction that made him realize what was important, that being successful depends on the happiness and not the amount of fame/money you have. And I think that is what he is trying to tell his fans and the world in general, to be yourself, spread kindness, and important value things. I guess Harry Styles will be remembered for all of it.”

Arctic Monkeys.

Arctic Monkeys is a rock band since 2002. The band became famous by demos given away to fans via burnt CDs. As the internet and technology grew fans shared these demos making Arctic Monkeys popular due to the rise of the internet. One of the GZAAT students who chose Arctic Monkeys and prefers to stay anonymous says: “Arctic Monkeys have been making music for a couple of years now. Although they have lost some relevance, they have a stable audience and fans that support them. Other artists on the list are Pop/Hip-Hop musicians where it's harder to keep the relevance and fame. Pop musicians get replaced faster than other genres.”

Beyonce.

Beyonce is the only solo artist besides Mariah Carey to have number one hit in four different decades. She has shown her talent to the world at a very young age. She was also the only artist to have six consecutive album hits and number one hit on the Billboard 200 chart. When Beyonce was only seven years old she won the talent show against competitors twice her age. One of the GZAAT students who chose Beyonce and prefers to stay anonymous says: “I think Beyonce will stand the test of time, not because she is better than the other artists listed, it’s just because she is really mainstream and popular, she has many awards and many iconic performances while other artists have smaller fan bases and less recognition.”

To find out which musician will stand the test of time I surveyed the GZAAT community in which 36 students from all grades participated. The results showed that the majority(22.2%) chose Harry Styles and Arctic Monkeys, followed by Beyonce(18.5%).

Here are some quotes from the students surveyed who chose other musicians that were not listed above. Liza Schierman, an 8th grader who chose Billie Eilish says: “Even though I am not a personal fan of Billie Eilish, I know that she is a very trendy artist. She also received fame at a very young age, which allowed the public to watch her grow up, which led to a variety of people developing a personal connection with her and her music. Her music is also very personal, emotional, and relatable and as a result, has many fans and listeners. She herself is also a very interesting person.” Ana Kharabadze, a 9th who chose Rihana says: “Her music is amazing, she has been releasing music and staying relevant for 15 years and is still at the top of the charts and even though she hasn't released music for a while now, she has been doing much more with her businesses and is still one of the most versatile musicians in the history.”

What do you think?
