As you already know, we recently switched from online school to physical school. Even though we might be going back to online school due to coronavirus spreading, we’ve been offline quite a bit. Therefore, it is interesting to see how this drastic change affected students’ academic performance. A google form was made to question some of the 9th graders of GZAAT about this topic.
The first question asked was- “How did the switch from online school to physical school affect your grades?”. As shown on the chart below, students whose grades stayed

the same are approximately 26%; students whose grades lowered are approximately 39%; Lastly, students whose grades improved after the transition to physical school are approximately 35%. In this sense, we can see how most of the students’ grades lowered after the school switched back to a physical school.
Now, questions appear- what is the reason for this change? Why did some student’s grades go down and some’s up? These were the next questions asked to the students. People who voted that their grades went down, which are the majority of the students, mostly blamed it on their shyness, social anxiety, and lack of class participation.

This kind of problem could have been caused because of how all of us were online for a year and were used to distance learning, where they didn’t have to communicate with other classmates face to face. Some of them also said that this change in their grades was the result of having no experience in high school. As the 9th graders had to start this academic year online, once switched to a physical school, mostly everything was new to them and it took them some time to adapt to the situation. Therefore, the grades could have been lowered in that period of time, as it takes some time to adapt to this kind of change.
However, the answers of those whose grades went up were much different. Most of them said that it was easier to concentrate as they have fewer distractions during the lesson, they were more motivated to participate in school, and generally, it was easier for some of them to participate at school rather than online.

These answers given by 9th-grade students show how the effect that this change has on students and their grades depends on the student itself. Moreover, the fact that most of the student’s grades lowered after transforming to physical school indicates that most of them found these changes challenging. However, as most of the students said, this problem can be resolved as they get used to the new environment. This will be hard to manage as the school might be shutting down again and we might be going back to online learning, but it was still interesting to see how this kind of changes could affect the students’ academic performance.
