GZAAT offers its students a lot of various clubs and after-school activities. These clubs include the newspaper club, the debates club, programming club, anime club, etc. The Programming Club at the school is divided into three parts, each one led by a different teacher. Each group studies different material and follows a different study course. At the beginning of the school year, the three teachers presented their study course to the students and briefly explained what they would be doing this year and the students were able to choose the one they were interested in.
One of the groups of the Programming Club is led by Ilia Mestvirishvili. Right now, the members of the club are studying “CS Fundamentals – INTRO”, which consists of 28 lessons, each lesson containing multiple stages. Every Friday, the members of the club hold meetings via Zoom(due to the current global situation), and discuss the problems or questions they had while completing the lessons. The members of the club help and explain the different stages to each other if anyone gets stuck at some point. There are sometimes various ways of completing a lesson, and members present how they did it.
A small survey was sent to the members of the programming club at the GZAAT asking different questions about the club. The students said that the main reason why they joined the Programming club in the first place is that they were interested in Computer Science and wanted to learn the basics of programming. „I’ve always wanted to learn about programming.“, said a Sophomore at the programming club. Someone also said: “Well I decided to join the programming club because I am very interested in this topic and I think that I’ll truly gain a lot of knowledge from it. I think that it’s truly a fun experience.”
Computer Science is the future of humanity. Technology is an expanding area, that’s why knowing the basics of Computer Science is essential in every field. In today’s world every area is somehow connected to computers and technology. Learning the basics of Computer Science in school broadens future possibilities and can take a student down several different paths in life. Future opportunities in computing are without boundaries. Computing suggests various profitable careers and helps the students gain a wide range of important skills. The club helps the students develop and improve different types of essential skills. One of the members of the club says: “Well, naturally I think I can do more things than I could when I first joined the club, we learned more techniques and we developed new skills.” Some of the lessons involve creating different pictures, shapes, or making games, which helps enhance the creativity of the student.
There are no limits to what you can do or create. Computer science relates to creativity in numerous ways. There is so much you can do once you can write a code, the possibilities are endless. Other lessons are about spotting and replacing the bugs in the codes, which improve problem-solving skills and critical thinking. Computer Science and the logic behind various types of codes enable a person to improve the way that they think. Some lessons are about identifying the function of the code, which develops analytical skills.
Overall, the club is very entertaining and educational at the same time. The Programming club helps the students decide if they want to take the path in life, which involves computer science. The course involves some videos of software developers and their experiences with programming and what they do, which gives the students a better understanding of that type of career. The students also enjoy the lessons very much and find computer science absorbing. One of the students at the club said „Every lesson is very interesting and I really enjoy learning about programming.“. Another member of the club says: “I love how we get to have a lot of fun while doing the work. I find it very interesting and I am very glad that I joined the club.” The main thing about the club is that members are having a lot of fun and look forward to new lessons every week.
