Music: Procrastination or Inspiration?

Kato Dadiani

GZAAT students will probably all agree that it’s been really hard to study; stay focused and keep the inspiration flowing while having to stay home. There are many hobbies one can take up and try to stay enthusiastic however, the school work is still stressful. One of the best ways to ease the stress while doing homework is listening to music while working, or is this just another way to interfere with our focus?

A survey conducted with the Freshmen class of GZAAT with 34 respondents shows that most of the school’s ninth-graders often listen to music while studying. Some students say that music is just another way of procrastination, most of the students reply that music actually helps them concentrate instead of being distracted. A few even say that music helps students relax; get more inspiration and be in a better mood. Several students even stated that music can improve memory, and it’s a great way to absorb information.

Based on the survey, 9th graders mostly listen to pop, hip-hop, jazz, and classical music. It is obvious to say that listening to music with a slower tempo and more relaxing sound will not be as intervening as music with a louder and more massive sound/beat. Surprisingly, some students can listen to techno and heavy metal while maintaining focus on their work.

Natalie Gordadze, a ninth-grader in American Academy, is also a dancer who listens to music all the time while doing her work. She says that music is something that makes life feel better, therefore it makes studying more fun too.

Interviewer: What kind of music do you listen to? Does it change when you’re studying?

Natalie: I listen to pop music all the time, studying or not. I would say that I mostly listen to Harry Styles, he is very popular today. I also listen to Dua Lipa because her songs are so upbeat and Sia, one of my favorite artists of all time.

Interviewer: In your opinion, what are the benefits of listening to music while studying?

Natalie: For me, it gets me more concentrated and energized. It also helps me be creative when I don’t have any ideas. Music is a good way to find your muse. I have heard that for some people it is a distraction, but I think it varies from person to person. I also think it has to do with the genre of the music they’re listening to. A bit of both.

It is good to see that students are finding different ways to make their studying process more interesting, profitable and comfortable. If you haven’t tried listening to music while studying, give it a go! You might be the one who benefits from this activity.
