The Lakers celebrating their 17th championship

Every year, basketball fans are eager to watch the NBA (National Basketball Association). Almost every day, about 15 thousand people are getting ready to go to the arena and watch a two-hour show of world-class basketball. However, this year’s season was vastly different from the others. The Coronavirus outbreak resulted in the suspension and/or delay of a lot of important events, including the 2019/2020 NBA season. When the NBA continued, it wasn’t the same: the teams had to compete in a fully isolated part of the city of Orlando, with no fans around to cheer for them. However, the comeback of the league still made millions of fans all over the world (including GZAAT Students) happy and eager to watch how the NBA would continue. They weren’t disappointed. Out of the 35 students that were interviewed, only two people were underwhelmed with this season, when over half of the students enjoyed it. This year’s NBA Playoffs were full of surprising upsets, back-and-forth games, and of course, it included the Finals, where the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat in six games. The Lakers leader, LeBron James, was voted as the best player in the Finals, A.K.A. the Finals MVP. Overall, we can all agree that this year’s NBA season was different, but nobody can say that it was underwhelming or disappointing in any way.

However, this season was not the only thing the outbreak affected. It recently became known that the 2020/21 NBA season will start on December 22nd, with only 72 regular-season games instead of 82, and once again, without the fans. But that’s not all. As you may or may not know, just a few days ago, the 2020 NBA Draft ceremony took place. The NBA Draft is an annual event since 1947 in which the teams from the NBA can select young basketball players from other leagues, who have potential, are eligible, and wish to join the league. And yet, this year, instead of hosting a huge ceremony that most basketball fans wouldn't miss, the Draft was held online via video conferencing. However, we must remember that this situation is not temporary. It is definitely a hard time for everybody, but we have to carry on.
